Jay Martinez is a small business owner/landscape consultant, school volunteer, husband, and father. He currently resides Sacramento, CA.
Jay knows the meaning of hard work. He started working as a janitor and grocery bagger at age 16. During college at Sacramento State, he worked part-time stocking groceries at night, and worked with his dad installing grass for residential homes during the day. Being unemployed during college was not an option for Jay. He then went on to become the first person in his family to graduate college.
Jay would later use his experiences to qualify for his contractor’s license, and ran a landscape contracting company for 11 years. After many years of success, Jay now consults full time, helping other small businesses succeed, and designs eco-friendly yards for homeowners as well in the Sacramento area.
Due to his company’s ten+ years of service, he was awarded by the California Landscape Contractor’s Association as a State of California Award Winning Contractor for superior craftsmanship and work. His company was also recognized by their local Assemblyman Kevin Kiley, who awarded his company the Certificate of Distinction for the many successful landscape projects done in Sacramento, Placer, and El Dorado Counties.
In addition to working as an employee for 9 years and being a small business owner for 11+ years, Jay has been active civically. He helped organize meetings at the State Capitol with State Assemblymembers and Senators in conjunction with other landscape contractors, landscape architects, and green industry professionals throughout the state, advocating and getting favorable results. He helped make landscape contractors be seen with our legislative officials and top state officials, and communicated the importance of what small businesses can do in their local communities.
Jay was appointed to the Sacramento County CPAC by the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors, where he served as Vice Chair. He currently now serves as appointed member of the Citizen Bond Oversight Committee (CBOC).
Jay attended Sacramento City College and Sacramento State, and received his BA degree from Sacramento State. He won the prestigious Nammour Symposium academic award during his time there, as well. In his free time, he likes to stay physically active lifting weights, hiking, wine tasting, and attending church and church functions with his family.
